Born in the capital city neighborhood of Lawton, he took part very early in the struggle against Fulgencio Batista and became one of the 82 members of the Granma yacht expedition headed by Fidel Castro, which arrived to Cuban coasts from Mexico in 1956. In the Sierra Maestra he achieved the rank of Commander and together with Ernesto Guevara at the end of 1958 led the invasion from East to West, which accelerated the triumph of the Revolution. He physically disappeared when the airplane in which he flew from Camaguey to Havana fell and disappeared into the sea. He is remembered as “the Hero of Yaguajay”.
