Born in Santiago de Cuba, he is recognized worldwide by the nickname of Compay Segundo. Guitar and clarinet player as well as composer, his sones, guarachas, boleros, and songs have rich Caribbean nuances. His voice, grave and round, accompanied many famous singers. His son Chan Chan is just irresistible and is listened to even in the Vatican. In 1998, he actively participated in the recording of the disk “Buena Vista Social Club”, which was awarded a Grammy prize.
