Professor and researcher of Cuban music, she worked for many years at the Institute of Ethnology and Folklore of the Cuban Academy of Sciences. Later she was appointed director of the Museum of Music and nowadays she performs the charge of vice-president of the Fernando Ortiz Foundation. She has been given the degree of Doctor Honoris Causa of the Superior Arts Institute of Cuba and has been awarded the Fernando Ortiz International Research Prize and the National Cultural Research Prize.
