He was born in Baní, Dominican Republic. Very early, he joined the struggle of Cubans for liberation from Spanish colonialism. He became and exemplary revolutionary and a military chief of exceptional qualities. He achieved the highest ranks of the Cuban Liberation Army. For the services to the Republic for more than 30 years, he was declared Cuban citizen by birth.
