He founded the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry (ICAIC), which he directed for eleven years. He co-directed the documentary El Mégano (1956) and has become an indispensable figure of Cuban cinematography of all times. He performs the duty of director of the International Cinema School located in San Antonio de los Baños, in the Havana Province.
