President of the Casa de las Américas, he has been awarded the National Poetry Prize (1949-1951) and the National Literature Prize (1989). He has taken studies at La Sorbonne, Paris and the University of London. He performed diplomatic duties as Cuban Cultural Counselor in France (1959-60), among many other responsibilities.
