Original from Santiago de Cuba. His gold medals in 400 m (44,26) and 800 (1:43,50) in the Olympic Games of 1976 Montreal, rose him forever to the glory. In 1977 he set pace in the 800m with a world record of 1:44,43 during the University Games in Sophia, Bulgaria. Two years after, uncomfortable damages appeared being with him until the final days of his career. In the University Games of 1973, in Moscow, he achieved the top record of the planet in his category. He was acknowledged as the Best Athlete of the World in 1976 and 1978 and received the Príncipe de Asturias Prize or Christopher Columbus Trophy. He never reigned at the Panamerican Games. After his retire in 1995, he became President of the Cuban Federation of Athletics and he is also serving as Vice-President of the National Institute of Sports. He is Representative of the Parliament since 1976.
