He was born in Limonar, Matanzas. Being 19 years old, he set the world junior record of high jump in 2.36. During his entire career, he jumps above 2,40 22 times. His first absolute world record is 2.43 in Salamanca, Spain, (September 8, 1988). Achieving afterwards 2.44 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He set 2.45, untouchable record up to this moment at the following year, again in Salamanca. Javier won gold medal in three world championships outdoors and four of these events indoors. He is equally treasuring victories in three Panamerican Games and another three Central American and Caribbean Games. At the JJ.OO in Sydney he won silver medal.
