  JAIME ORTEGA ALAMINO  (1936-)

He was born in Jaguey Grande, Matanzas. Fifteen years after that, he started to exercise as the priest of his native town. He was appointed Bishop of Pinar del Río (1979), two years after the Holy See promoted him to Archbishop of Havana, and on October 30th, 1994 the Pope John Paul II named him Cardinal, a rank never attained by another Cuban since 1963, date of the death of Manuel Arteaga Betancourt.
